Seeking Wisdom

Ask Pa-Pa

December 1, 2011

My grandchildren ask lots of questions. They are sorting out our world and all that is in it. I hope that I always take the time to listen. I hope after listening and considering all the options, that I give good answers. As they seek wisdom, I hope that I am a resource they will use over and over.

The first day of December and the last month of 2011 is upon us. The children are getting antsy as they wait for Christmas… I guess I fall into that category too 😮 It is a wonderful time of year…if you choose it to be.

I have been caught up in getting the farm ready for winter. Many of my projects are complete. There are jobs that will continue all year, like manure handling, firewood cutting and splitting and animal care. The corn harvest will soon be complete…once the rain gives me a break.

I sought the wisdom of my grandparents in many things. The corn harvest is only one question that I had answered by them. They told me this,” Float several random ears from around the field in a bucket of water. If the ears float, the corn will keep in a crib. If the ears sink, they are not dried down enough to keep and will mold if you try to store them.” Well, the ears are floating …. I must get busy.

December is my birth month. I like winter, cold and snow. I enjoy the horses pulling a sled as much as any job on the farm. When that sled is gliding along on a field of white, it just makes things even better. Many of my best  memories were made in the winter and revolve around seeking the wisdom of others … I hope to continue in that tradition and shed light when called upon…. but continue to look for that light in others.
