On The Move

I am working on moving into my retro-fitted building that will become my new forge shop. I am taking my time and hanging old tools and such up on my walls. Many of the tools belonged to my great grandfather. Some of the stuff I have gathered over time from being in the farming and draft horse business.

Many of the tools will soon fade away into an old memory. I feel that by keeping them in sight and showing them to my family and visitors, the tools will continue to live a bit longer. They will be a testament to the old men who used them. Things like ice tongs, hay saws, corn knives and grub hoes, will take a place on the wall among old signs and pictures.

It will be a rather eclectic mix of things, but plenty of conversation starters for sure. The forge room itself is a glimpse of the past. Not many folks in today’s throw away world, will take the time to make hooks, handles and homemade knives, but I do. I want to pass this knowledge on to others.

I love the simplicity of it all. I doubt that I will ever become and artist in this craft, but I do have a functional knowledge. The main thing is that I enjoy this hobby of mine. Plus, I get to make some practical things along the way that are useful to boot!

These are older photos, but handles and shelf brackets that I made came in handy. I have a list of things to make this winter once I get moved into the new shop. I promise to take a few photos and “show you around” once I get the move completed.

The Suffolk draft horses are keeping me busy too. The horses all need worked. Young horses need trained and of course chores are a daily routine. Feeding and cleaning are two jobs that are never done, but that is okay. I never want to run out of work!
