Wet Warm January

Here we are, almost the middle of January, with the exception of two lake effect snow events, we have not had winter yet. We have had abundant rainfall. The soil is saturated. The pond is full to overflowing and even the grass is still green.

The mud that prevails everywhere has made it tough to do much of anything farm related. We pile our manure and feed the stock on the concrete dry lot next to the barn. The hay is in a big manger. It is large enough to put 4 big round bales in at a time. The animals also get hay in their stall mangers.

They say some very cold weather moves in this week. I am looking forward to it. The water has sunk into the soil enough that once the ground freezes, the horses will get some much needed playtime.

Water stands in this photo taken two days ago. This morning it has abated. It will be nice to get back to working outside and in the woods. I have avoided several jobs so as not to make a mess. The ruts and hoofprints made in muddy ground last a long time.

There is much to do. Maple syrup season will soon be upon us. The high winds of the last two days have surely taken down many dead limbs and trees. I am sure the maple sap paths will need cleared throughout the entire woods. I also have some firewood logs to skid out.

Training of the young horses can now intensify as the ground firms up from the deep freeze. Winter this year has been fleeting, but I have not missed the snow shoveling or plowing. All things have drawbacks I guess and even a few perks!

Stay tuned as our 2024 adventures start to happen. Freeze or not the show must go on.
