September Happenings

The month is off to a busy start. The gardens are almost done for the year. We dug some of the potatoes today. Just a few more rows to go and that job is finished.

We are continuing to train our young horses. Joy, in the photo above is doing very well in her biting rig. This light harness teaches a horse to walk with their head straight, turning their bodies not just throwing their heads at a turn.

The harness is loose, but just a little confining. The horse learns to walk, stop, turn and stand all on their own, under my watchful eye. I monitor the whole process. When I walk out onto the lot, she comes up to me and stands, waiting on direction or to be petted, for a job well done.

We dragged a whole lot of firewood tree tops out to the edges of the sap roads. The horses and I will start dragging them to the woodshed to be cut, split and stacked. Hopefully we will get a few done this week. I’m not in a rush yet and I am using the job for training too.

2-Year old Grace, doing well in the cart. She will start working in a team this week. She has done well on her own. She is now ready to work with a partner. I am choosing to work her with her momma Amee. Amee is a solid work horse and a great trainer.

Weaning of the 2024 babies started yesterday. The first one is not happy with me yet, but has quieted down a lot since yesterday. Her mom doesn’t even whinny back at her. Mom was ready for her to be weaned! I am thinking the baby was rough with her teeth because mom would even squeal at the baby at times when she nursed. It will all be fine in another day or two.

As we approach the middle of the month, there is a lot happening, but we are seeing a few jobs come to their seasonal end. It’s a good time on the farm.
