Blanket of White

Yesterday was Thanksgiving. We had family and much to eat as we gave thanks for our blessings. The house got quiet after everyone left. Chores were done and a slight drizzle fell outside. I slept like a baby. When I awoke, our world was white. We were blanketed in over ten inches of newly fallen snow!

It was a bit of a shock, even though the weatherman said we might get a dusting. The main snow is predicted to fall from now until the beginning of next week. Today’s snow was not expected, but was it ever beautiful!

The sugarhouse is almost lost in the sea of white. The large pine trees resemble those found on Christmas cards. It was an enchanting morning.

I trudged to the barn to feed the hungry animals. It was the first time since march that boots were required, not to mention gloves. The horses were glad to see me as always, but seemed to gobble their feed faster than normal.

Joy and Magee, waited at the gate. They got to play in the snow and munch on hay all night. I shut them behind the gate to keep them from pestering Hank as they played outside. They have shelter by the hay feeder and can get out of the wind too.

They softly nickered to me as I brought them their morning ration of spelt. They reside in an adjoining barn. It is our old pig barn, partially revamped. I raised the gates and took out a couple partitions to house that young girls this winter. They came right in to their new barn for grain and hay. It will do for a few months, but a retrofit will happen in the spring.

I plowed the drive to make room for the continuing snow fall. I delivered two loads of logs to a nearby sawmill. The logs were from trees harvested just a week or so ago that the horses helped harvest. The lumber will be used for the building project as we enlarge our pig barn and turn it into a horse barn.

November comes to a close showing us that winter is indeed here. Gone are the unseasonable days that we had enjoyed for most of the month. It is all well, everything looks so beautiful adorned in its blanket of white. I just shrugged off the cold and enjoyed the view!
