Our spring continued to be evasive. Long hours and too many days at my off farm job has caused delays in getting into the fields. It’s no big deal. The soil is just starting to warm and dry enough to work it anyway. I am spending time with family, especially the little ones.

My grandson continues to like blacksmithing. He is coming along very well. He started banging and bending horseshoe nails. He has now moved up to steel stock. He likes the coal forge and turning the blower crank, but hammering hot iron is his favorite!

Two of our grandchildren live here on the farm with us. They live next door, but seek out Pa-pa and Grammy often. They like feeding the chickens ear corn. They would shell corn until the chickens burst, but understand why we don’t.

So spring is here…finally. The horses and I will soon be in the fields. The animals are grazing spring pastures, but are still munching a little hay. The leaves on the trees are starting to pop. Most of the shedding winter coats is a memory and garden planting looms on the horizon. I can’t say that I have wasted one minute…but it is sure time for Spring Chores.

The Lil Red Hen takes a break!

The Lil Red Hen takes a break!

June 25, 2015

“Who wants to spend their life in a small cage, laying eggs?” … “not I”, said the Lil Red Hen

“Who wants to live in a crowded barn with 49,999 other hens?” …”Not I”, said the Lil Red Hen

“Who thinks overcrowding, antibiotics, and fecal matter so thick a hen can’t breathe is the way to raise chickens? … Certainly not I”, said the Lil Red Hen

It’s not funny! It is true. I can’t help but wonder about all the hype caused by the “avian flu”.  “They” say it came from China. Hmmm, now we are supposed to be glad that our egg prices won’t go up because we are going to import eggs…from China!

“They” say us backyard flocks are the problem. I say bullshit! I think this is one more way to scare city people into “buying what they are selling”. I think it’s one more way for our far reaching government to control us. I fear their efforts to “help me out”.

Thomas Jefferson said, “A government big enough to give us all we want, is big enough to take all we have.” I think these words have never been truer. “I love my country, but fear my government”….. what a sad thing to say…, said the Lil Red Blogger.

The hens think I'm crazy

The hens think I’m crazy

February 4, 2015

Stupid Woodchuck…all it has done this week is snow. I like snow and it is a very good thing! I have it piled up everywhere, so I’m thinking I will be liking it for quite a while! I plowed for three hours today. I dug out the barn doors, gates and cleaned off the feedlot. Just about the time I finished, it started snowing again. By the time I finished evening chores… I had to plow the driveway again 😮

Our hen house is nice and roomy. It provides not only shelter for our gals, but an excercise area as well. It is eight by sixteen, very tall with lots of natural light. Currently we have nine hens. This gives each lady over fourteen square feet of living space to herself. The ladies though, still crowd each other. I think they just like being close.

I am sure they are looking forward to the warm days of spring, just like the rest of us. The hens don’t get seed catalogs, so they pass the time looking out the window. They jump up on the feed can and watch everything that moves. I am sure these last few days they think I’m a nut, for spending all this time pushing snow around.
