Foal Fun So Far

We are almost done foaling for 2025. We still have one more lady to go and she is overdue by a couple days. She is under constant watch. As we wait on the next baby, we get to watch the 5 foals born so far, play in the pastures.

Foaling is an exciting time of year. It is also a bit scary. We wait for eleven months for the babies to come. Horse babies are fragile and moms require extra watching too. We must make sure the baby nurses, mom and the baby bond, mom passes her placenta and the baby poops for the first time.

These things usually take about three hours to accomplish, when everything goes well. It almost always happens in the middle of the night, making for a short sleep and a long day! I think its worth it, but it does make a guy yawn a lot.

I never thought that I would be a horse breeder, yet here I am. These Suffolk Punch horses, rare to the world but common here on our farm, make me smile. Watching the growing foals gives my soul a boost each year. We are breeding the best that we can and it shows in the young horses.

Like children, they grow fast! It is great to be a part of the process. In fact, I would say it’s downright fun!

A XC horse trainer I follow on Instagram who lives in CO posted a video about a rare horse breed in the UK. Only 500 horses left & it was a Suffolk! I messaged her that I have a Suffolk Horse breeder in my town & she commented how lucky!! Small World. Love to see the foals!
