Spring Plowing
Plowing with 3 2009

May 4th 2011, too wet to plow this year yet. We just had the rainest April on record and have already dumped an inch and a half of rain out of the rain guage so far this week. All farmers are delayed in our area, not just me.

Our Ewes are lambing. They started last Saturday. We have one set of triplets and several sets of twins on the ground so far. Our sheep are Katahdins that lamb on pasture with no need for “jugs”  or small pens that other breeds demand. Our flock is made up of exceptional mothers that excell on our rich pastures.

We also raise most of our family’s food, both meat and produce on our farm. We are downsizing from a commercial farm to a smaller family type farm dedicated to preserving the sustainable way of farming. We want to encourage this approach in our farm’s decendants and visitors. I want to share my knowledge with the world by consulting with beginning farmers and homesteaders around the world.

You have a unique way of making progress by stepping back in time. Seems you were born 100 years too late! But your Grandpa would be proud!

Mr. Rice, I found your blog a while back and have been making my way through your entries. I have read some of your articles in some farming magazines as well. I appreciate you sharing your farm with us and hope to utilize a lot of the same techniques as you on my future farm. Much appreciated, -Adam
