One more view of the syrup arch

January 13, 2012

Okay, bear with me here. This is one more view of the maple syrup arch. This is the part where the fire will eventually go, that boils the maple sap down to that sweet amber confection I adore. This arch is OLD. It is an antique, but I am breathing new life into it.
Some of my idle time will be filled with wire brushing all the rust off of this old cast iron firebox and giving it a coat of stoveblack. This black runny liquid bonds with the metal and gives the look of new to it. It will make my arch look nice, but more importantly, it will protect it from the elements.
If I had time to work on this today, I could call it black Friday. If you have never used stoveblack, suffice to say…it could be called “manblack”  Well… at least when I use the stuff 😮  The effort is worth it, even if it does take a while for the stuff to wear off.
The second part of the post is about Friday the 13th. I think its gibberish to get all worked up about it. I am not supersticious…thank you God. I think it’s neat, sort of like a blue moon. Just one more phenomenon that got a name.
It is winter here today. The wind is blowing snow and the temperature continues to drop. Everything is frozen. If the snow would hold off, the ground might freeze enough to hold up the cornpicker…but they say three to five inches of snow by nightfall. Once night gets here, it is supposed to really snow.
No sense in believing in Friday the 13th ..when you live in the land of Lake Effect Snowfall…
